GOALS AND ACHIEVEMENTS of Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus (UofT)

October 2, 2010

1) Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus (UofT) is an ongoing completely volunteer student initiative currently annually sponsoring over 130 orphans from over 20 different countries, spanning 4 continents.  We sponsor the orphans from Government of Canada registered charities.  OSP in its seventh year has accummulatively fundraised over $300,000.  In 2003, OSP at UofT began with the hopes of fundraising to sponsor orphans from underprivileged countries around the world and making a positive difference in their lives.

Donations are collected year-round and cover education, health, food, shelter, and other basic necessities for the orphans.

OSP’s aim is to continue to help the orphans all over the world, to the best of our abilities year after year.

OSP is not limited to University of Toronto.  We have been getting volunteers and donations from across Canada and USA.  Donors can receive Canadian tax receipt for their donation upon request.  The 3 methods of payments are:  Cheque, online via PayPal (via OSP site), and Cash.

For further detailed information about ways to donate, how much it costs to sponsor an orphan for a year, countries of sponsorship, and donor opportunities, see the following link from the OSP site:

https://ospuoft.wordpress.com/help-make-a-positive-difference-in-the-lives-of-orphans/
2) We have been educating students and the community about the plight of the orphans by means of talks, seminars, emails, posters, and annual events (including bake sales, information booths, fundraising dinner, video game tournament events, sending letters/cards/gifts to the orphans, and visiting the orphans in person).

3) OSP’s achievements, work, and updates have been featured in various media (i.e. many newspapers/magazines, radio, etc.) in Canada and USA, including Toronto Star newspaper, ISNA’s magazine, and The Newspaper (UofT’s newspaper).  Being featured in the media helps to further increase awareness, volunteers, and donations for the OSP/orphans.

4) We hope to achieve our aim by also encouraging and aiding others to start up similar orphan sponsorship initiatives at their university, school, campus, association, community, etc.
For example, OSP has helped, assisted, encouraged universities and high schools in North America to start their own initiative of sponsoring orphans, including ISNA High School, UTM, UTSC, Ryerson, University of Waterloo, University of Texas, McMaster.

On January 15th, 2010, OSP at UofT was invited to speak at ISNA High School (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada), to encourage and aid the school to start a similar orphan sponsorship initiative.  OSP’s second visit to ISNA High School was on May 7th, 2010, where OSP also presented awards to recognize and appreciate the school’s achievement in fundraising over $1,800 towards having their own program of sponsoring orphans like OSP at UofT.

MEDIA COVERAGE of Orphan Sponsorship Program at University of Toronto (OSP)

January 11, 2009

OSP’s achievements, work, and updates have been featured in various media (i.e. many newspapers/magazines, radio, etc.) locally, nationally, and internationally.

The OSP has come a long way and is currently sponsoring over 130 orphans annually from over 20 different countries, spanning 4 continents.  This is a blessing, but also a challenge to continue, thus we need to spread the word to ensure OSP’s continued success of sponsoring the orphans year after year, Insha’Allah (God Willing).  Such features in media helps the OSP by letting others know (We’ve been getting donations from all over Canada and outside of Canada)

If you’re interested in reporting OSP’s achievements, work, and updates in media, contact us at osp.uoft@yahoo.ca

Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) at University of Toronto (UofT): HELP SPONSOR AN ORPHAN – CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS THIS RAMADAN

August 23, 2008

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,” putting his index and middle fingers together. [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Would you like to make the most of Ramadan (Month of Fasting) by making a positive difference in the life of an orphan and Insha’Allah (God Willing) to be in Paradise with the Prophet (Peace be upon him)?

Here’s your chance …

The Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) at the University of Toronto (UofT) in its 5 years of existence has fundraised over $205,000 – which is unheard of in student fundraising initiatives Masha’Allah (God has willed it)! This year, we are sponsoring 120 orphans from over 17 countries, spanning 4 continents. It would now cost over $50,000 to re-sponsor all the orphans for an additional year and this can only be possible with YOUR help!

The OSP at UofT is looking for dedicated volunteers to fill out various OSP committee positions which include the position of OSP Advertising Co-Coordinator. There are many general volunteer positions also available, so contact us as soon as possible and make a positive difference in the lives of orphans. Please also spread the word, encouraging others to donate to OSP, which is vitally important to OSP as well.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan (May God reward you for your efforts)!

The Orphan Sponsorship Program (OSP) @ University of Toronto

September 17, 2007

In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

‘By the end of 2003, there were an estimated 143 million orphans aged 0-17 in 93 developing countries’ (UNICEF, 2004). More than 16 million children were orphaned in 2003 alone. Due to recent events such as wars, tsunami, earthquakes, etc these numbers have no where to go but up.

In 2003, the Orphan Sponsorship Program was launched, aiming to bring awareness to the situation of orphans around the world and fundraise to sponsor orphans, trying to do what we can in the hopes of giving these kids a better life & future. The orphans are sponsored through Govt. of Canada registered charities and the donation covers education, health, food, shelter and other basic necessities for the orphans.

Since then, our efforts have simply been blessed

Accumulatively, for the 4 years of OSP’s existence we’ve fundraised over $144,000!

This has enabled us to sponsor 100 orphans from 17 countries, spanning 4 continents (for a full list of countries see below)

Our success is truly a blessing, but now the challenge is even greater as we require around $44,000 to re-sponsor all 100 children for another year BUT with your help, we can do this Insha’Allah!

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,” putting his index and middle fingers together. [Sahih Al- Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 34]

So please help out and make a difference in the life of an orphan!

Countries we’re sponsoring from and how much it costs to sponsor an orphan for a year:

(the differences are due to the differences in the cost of living in different countries)

It costs $360/year to sponsor an orphan from: Afghanistan, Kashmir, Bangladesh, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Guyana, Kosovo, & Indonesia.

It costs $720/year to sponsor an orphan from: Palestine, Lebanon, & Bosnia.

It costs $420/year to sponsor an orphan from: Egypt & Burkina Faso.
